Vaiśampāyana said: O best of kings! After a long time, the beautiful Devayānī went to the same forest to play.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! बहुत समय के बाद सुन्दर देवयानी उसी वन में खेलने के लिए गयी।
With Śarmiṣṭhā and the 1000 maid servants, she reached the same spot and began to roam around as she pleased. Being attended by all those friends, she felt very happy.
शर्मिष्ठा और 1000 दासियों के साथ वह उसी स्थान पर पहुंची और इच्छानुसार घूमने लगी। उन सभी मित्रों के सम्मिलित होने से उसे बहुत प्रसन्नता हुई।
All of them sported in abandon, drinking the nectar from mādhavī creepers, eating diverse food and biting into fruit.
वे सभी माधवी लताओं का रस पीते, तरह-तरह के भोजन करते और फल खाते-खाते एकांत में खेल रहे थे।
In search of deer to hunt, the king who was Nāhuṣa's son again came to the same place, exhausted and thirsty.

He saw Devayānī and Śarmiṣṭhā, with all those ladies. They were drinking and languid, adorned in celestial ornaments.

He saw the sweet-smiling Devayānī seated there. Among all those beautiful women, she was unparalleled in her loveliness. She was waited upon by Śarmiṣṭhā, who was massaging her feet.
उन्होंने वहाँ मधुर-मुस्कुराती हुई देवयानी को बैठे देखा। उन सभी खूबसूरत महिलाओं के बीच, वह अपनी सुंदरता में अद्वितीय थी। शर्मिष्ठा उसका इंतजार कर रही थी, जो उसके पैरों की मालिश कर रही थी।
Yayāti said: "It seems that these 1000 women are surrounding the two of you. O beautiful ones! Tell me your names and your clans."
ययाति ने कहा, "ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि ये 1000 स्त्रियाँ तुम दोनों को घेरे हुए हैं। हे सुंदरियों! मुझे अपना नाम और अपना कुल बताओ।"
Devayānī replied: "O ruler of men! Hear my words and know that I am the daughter of Śukra, the preceptor of the āsura-s.
देवयानी ने उत्तर दिया: "हे मनुष्यों के शासक! मेरी बातें सुनो और जान लो कि मैं असुरों के गुरु शुक्र की बेटी हूं।

Yayāti asked: "This maiden is beautiful. She has lovely eyebrows. I am curious to know how this daughter of the āsura king, your friend, has come to be your slave."
ययाति ने पूछा: "यह युवती सुंदर है। उसकी भौहें सुंदर हैं। मुझे यह जानने की उत्सुकता है कि आपके मित्र असुर राजा की यह पुत्री आपकी दासी कैसे बन गई है।"

Devayānī replied: "O tiger among men! Everything follows what has been destined. Do not be surprised at what seems to be out of the ordinary and know that everything is determined by destiny.
देवयानी ने उत्तर दिया: "हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! हर चीज नियति के अनुसार होती है। जो सामान्य से बाहर लगता है उस पर आश्चर्यचकित न हों और जानें कि सब कुछ नियति द्वारा निर्धारित होता है।

राजवद्रूपवेषौ ते ब्राह्मीं वाचं बिभर्षि च किंनामा त्वं कुतश्चासि कस्य पुत्रश्च शंस मे
Your form and attire is like that of a king. Your speech is like that of one who knows the Veda-s. What is your name? Where have you come from? Whose son are you? Tell me."
आपका रूप और वेश राजा के समान है। आपकी वाणी वेदों के जानने वाले के समान है। आपका क्या नाम है? आप कहां से आए हैं? तुम किसके पुत्र हो? मुझे बताओ।"
Yayāti replied: "During my years of brahmacarya, the entire knowledge of the Veda-s penetrated my ears. I am a king and the son of a king. I am known as Yayāti."
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "मेरे ब्रह्मचर्य के वर्षों के दौरान, वेदों का संपूर्ण ज्ञान मेरे कानों में समा गया। मैं एक राजा और एक राजा का पुत्र हूं। मुझे ययाति के नाम से जाना जाता है।"
Devayānī asked: "O king! Why have you come to this region? Is it to gather lotuses or hunt for deer?"

Yayāti replied: "O fortunate one! I came to hunt for deer and came here to search for water. You speak a lot. Please allow me to leave now."

देवयान्युवाच द्वाभ्यां कन्यासहस्राभ्यां दास्या शर्मिष्ठया सह त्वदधीनास्मि भद्रं ते सखा भर्ता च मे भव
Devayānī said: "With the slave Śarmiṣṭhā, the two of us and 1000 maid servants are at your command to serve you. O fortunate one! Please be my friend and husband."
देवयानी ने कहा: "दासी शर्मिष्ठा के साथ, हम दोनों और 1000 दासियाँ आपकी सेवा के लिए आपकी आज्ञा पर हैं। हे भाग्यशाली! कृपया मेरी मित्र और पति बनो।"

ययातिरुवाच विद्ध्यौशनसि भद्रं ते न त्वामर्होऽस्मि भामिनि अविवाह्या हि राजानो देवयानि पितुस्तव
Yayāti replied: "O beautiful one! I am not worthy of you. You are the daughter of Uśanas. O Devayānī! Your father cannot marry you to a king."
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "हे सुंदरी! मैं तुम्हारे योग्य नहीं हूं। तुम उशनस की बेटी हो। हे देवयानी! तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हारा विवाह किसी राजा से नहीं कर सकते।"
Devayānī replied: "Brāhmana-s have already been united with Kṣatriya-s and Kṣatriya-s have been united with Brāhmana-s. You are a riṣi and the son of a riṣi. O son of Nāhuṣa! Therefore, marry me."
देवयानी ने उत्तर दिया: "ब्राह्मण पहले ही क्षत्रियों के साथ एकजुट हो चुके हैं और क्षत्रिय ब्राह्मणों के साथ एकजुट हो चुके हैं। आप ऋषि हैं और ऋषि के पुत्र हैं। हे नहुष के पुत्र! इसलिए, मुझसे विवाह करो।"
Yayāti replied: "O beautiful one! There is no doubt that the four vārṇa-s have sprung from a single body. But their purity varies and so does their dharma. The Brāhmaṇa is superior to the others."
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "हे सुंदरी! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि चार वर्ण एक ही शरीर से उत्पन्न हुए हैं। लेकिन उनकी पवित्रता भिन्न होती है और उनका धर्म भी भिन्न होता है। ब्राह्मण दूसरों से श्रेष्ठ है।"

देवयान्युवाच पाणिधर्मो नाहुषायं न पुम्भिः सेवितः पुरा तं मे त्वमग्रहीरग्रे वृणोमि त्वामहं ततः
Devayānī said: "O son of Nāhuṣa! Earlier, no man except you has ever touched my hand. Therefore, in accordance with the dharma of accepting the hand, I accept you as my husband.
देवयानी ने कहा: "हे नहुष के पुत्र! इससे पहले, तुम्हारे अलावा किसी भी पुरुष ने कभी मेरा हाथ नहीं छुआ है। इसलिए, हाथ स्वीकार करने के धर्म के अनुसार, मैं तुम्हें अपने पति के रूप में स्वीकार करती हूं।"

My hand has been touched by you, who are a riṣi and the son of a riṣi. How can a proud one like me allow any other man to touch my hand?"

Yayāti replied: "The learned men know that a Brāhmaṇa is more to be avoided than a virulently poisonous and angry snake or a blazing fire that spreads in all directions."
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "विद्वान लोग जानते हैं कि एक अत्यंत जहरीले और क्रोधित सांप या सभी दिशाओं में फैलने वाली धधकती आग की तुलना में एक ब्राह्मण से अधिक बचा जाना चाहिए।"
Devayānī asked: "O bull among men! Why do you say that a Brāhmaṇa is more to be avoided than a virulently poisonous and angry snake or a blazing fire that spreads in all directions?"
देवयानी ने पूछा: "हे नरश्रेष्ठ! आप ऐसा क्यों कहते हैं कि एक अत्यंत जहरीले और क्रोधित साँप या सभी दिशाओं में फैलने वाली धधकती आग की तुलना में एक ब्राह्मण से अधिक बचना चाहिए?"
Yayāti replied: "The snake kills only one. The sharpest weapon kills only one. But if angry, a Brāhmaṇa can destroy many cities and kingdoms.
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "सांप केवल एक को मारता है। सबसे तेज हथियार केवल एक को मारता है। लेकिन क्रोधित होने पर, एक ब्राह्मण कई शहरों और राज्यों को नष्ट कर सकता है।"

दुराधर्षतरो विप्रस्तस्माद्भीरु मतो मम अतोऽदत्तां च पित्रा त्वां भद्रे न विवहाम्यहम्
O timid one! Therefore, I think that it is harder to fend off a Brāhmaṇa. O fortunate one! I cannot marry you unless your father bestows you on me."
हे डरपोक! इसलिए, मेरा मानना है कि ब्राह्मण से बचना कठिन है। हे भाग्यवान! मैं तुमसे तब तक विवाह नहीं कर सकता जब तक तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हें मुझे न दे दें।”

देवयान्युवाच दत्तां वहस्व पित्रा मां त्वं हि राजन्वृतो मया अयाचतो भयं नास्ति दत्तां च प्रतिगृह्णतः
Devayānī said: "O king! I have chosen you. It is agreed that my father will bestow me on you and you will marry me. You need have no fear you have not asked for me. You will receive what is given to you."
देवयानी ने कहा: "हे राजा! मैंने तुम्हें चुना है। यह तय है कि मेरे पिता मुझे तुम्हें सौंप देंगे और तुम मुझसे शादी करोगे। तुम्हें डरने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है कि तुमने मुझसे नहीं मांगा है। तुम्हें जो दिया जाएगा वही तुम्हें मिलेगा।"

वैशंपायन उवाच त्वरितं देवयान्याथ प्रेषितं पितुरात्मनः श्रुत्वैव च स राजानं दर्शयामास भार्गवः
Vaiśampāyana said: Devayānī quickly sent a message to her father. On hearing this, Bhṛgu's descendant went to meet the king.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: देवयानी ने तुरंत अपने पिता को एक संदेश भेजा। यह सुनकर भृगु के वंशज राजा से मिलने गये।
On seeing Śukra come, Yayāti, the lord of the earth, paid homage to the Brāhmaṇa Kāvya with joined palms, worshipped him and waited.
शुक्र को आते देख पृथ्वी के स्वामी ययाति ने हाथ जोड़कर ब्राह्मण काव्य को प्रणाम किया, उनकी पूजा की और प्रतीक्षा की।
Devayānī said: "O father! This is the king who is Nāhuṣa's son. He grasped my hand when I was in trouble. Bestow me to him. I will accept no one else in the world as my husband."
देवयानी ने कहा: "हे पिता! यह राजा नहुष का पुत्र है। जब मैं संकट में थी तो उसने मेरा हाथ पकड़ लिया था। मुझे उसे सौंप दो। मैं दुनिया में किसी और को अपने पति के रूप में स्वीकार नहीं करूंगी।"
Śukra said: "O son of Nāhuṣa! You are brave. You have been chosen by my beloved daughter as her husband. I give her to you. Accept her as your queen."
शुक्र ने कहा: "हे नहुष के पुत्र! तुम बहादुर हो। तुम्हें मेरी प्यारी बेटी ने अपने पति के रूप में चुना है। मैं उसे तुम्हें सौंपता हूं। उसे अपनी रानी के रूप में स्वीकार करो।"
Yayāti replied: "O descendant of the Bhṛgu lineage! I seek a boon from you. Let no great sin descend on me as a consequence of my begetting offspring of mixed caste."
ययाति ने उत्तर दिया: "हे भृगु वंश के वंशज! मैं आपसे वरदान चाहता हूं। मिश्रित जाति की संतान पैदा करने के परिणामस्वरूप मुझ पर कोई बड़ा पाप न लगे।"
Adiparvan · v32
शुक्र उवाच अधर्मात्त्वां विमुञ्चामि वरयस्व यथेप्षितम् अस्मिन्विवाहे मा ग्लासीरहं पापं नुदामि ते
Śukra said: "I free you from this non-adherence to dharma. You will receive your desired boon. No sin will befall you as a result of this marriage.
शुक्र ने कहा: "मैं तुम्हें धर्म का पालन न करने से मुक्त करता हूं। तुम्हें अपना वांछित वरदान मिलेगा। इस विवाह के परिणामस्वरूप तुम्हें कोई पाप नहीं लगेगा।"
Maintain the slender-waisted Devayānī as your wife in accordance with dharma. With her, may you find incomparable happiness.
धर्म के अनुसार पतली कमर वाली देवयानी को अपनी पत्नी के रूप में बनाए रखो। उसके साथ तुम्हें अतुलनीय खुशी मिले।
O king! Always respect this maiden Śarmiṣṭhā, Vrishaparva's daughter, and you must never call her to your bed."
हे राजा! वृषपर्वा की पुत्री शर्मिष्ठा का सदैव सम्मान करो और तुम्हें उसे कभी भी अपने बिस्तर पर नहीं बुलाना चाहिए।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Having been thus addressed, Yayāti circumambulated Śukra. With the great-souled one's permission, he returned happily to his own city.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, ययाति ने शुक्र की परिक्रमा की। महात्मा की आज्ञा से वह प्रसन्नतापूर्वक अपने नगर को लौट आया।
